Simply leave your desk at home behind and work on the go. Whether on the beach, in an igloo or on a mountain top: as long as there is an internet connection, there are theoretically no limits to the concept of workation (a neologism made up of "work" and "holiday"). Well, at most the company's legal policy.
With Workation, the flexibility of your own work location reaches its peak. And we saw this in the Work Happiness Report 2024: Flexibility is crucial for happiness at work. And according to a PWC study on workation, this maximum flexibility is also an issue for the future, as the ability to work while travelling is particularly important to younger respondents.
Workation is still a rarity
For the Work Happiness Report 2024, we only surveyed people who work at a desk. In theory, workation should then be possible for everyone, right?

Our figures on Workation, published here for the first time, show: However, most (a full 60%) say "No, I can't do Workation at my company". Only around a third (32%) can do their work flexibly while travelling. But what about the remaining 8% who aren't sure? There appear to be communication gaps in the company here.

Those who can do workation are happier in their job
Now we want to know exactly: If flexibility at work makes you happy, workation must too - right?
Bingo! Respondents to the Work Happiness Report 2024 who stated that they had the option of workation in their job achieved a score of 7.5/10 on the work happiness scale.
Those who stated that they did not have the option of workation in their job achieved a score of 6.5/10 on the work happiness scale, making them quite a bit unhappier than those with a workation option.
For Workation, things have to be organised
However, working while travelling requires more than just a laptop. Especially when there is a time difference, asynchronous work on projects and their organisation must run smoothly.
This is the only way to ensure that Workation does not create any blockers: What is the connection between the Workation option and the existing project management tool?
Those who work in a company with a workation option are more than twice as likely to organise themselves in a project management tool.
At the same time, over 70% of those who do not have a workation option say that their company does not use a project management tool for organisation.
The bottom line: those who organise themselves transparently and clearly in a project management tool are more likely to have a workation option in the company.
